Silk Painting class (4/8 sessions pack)
Discover the beauty of traditional silk painting, learn a unique skill, and complete your own.
Service Description
Silk painting is an enchanting art form that involves applying paint to silk textiles, using the exquisite fiber produced from silkworm cocoons. Chinese artisans traditionally prepared the silk surface with a stone and adorned it with vibrant mineral pigments or black ink, often for calligraphy. Over the centuries, Chinese artisans evolved from simple black-ink designs to embrace the Gongbi style. Gongbi, or "meticulous painting," gained renown for its rich colors, lifelike details, and figurative themes. Flourishing between the 7th and 13th centuries, this technique produced a wealth of beautifully crafted handscrolls. Its influence extended to Japan, India, and Western Europe, where painted silk fabric adorned altars and curtains. Notably, the art of silk painting also left a significant impact in Korea, giving rise to unique styles like Buddhism paintings and decorative art.
